ℹ️ Note:OBC-NCL students compete against each other for reserved seats — not against the General pool. Your OBC-NCL rank (not CRL rank) is what matters for reserved seats.

OBC-NCL vs CRL — Understanding Your Two Ranks

As an OBC-NCL student, you have two ranks in JEE Main: your CRL (Common Rank List) rank used for General Open seats, and your OBC-NCL rank used for OBC-NCL reserved seats. In JoSAA, you should fill choices targeting both pools — the algorithm picks whichever gives you a better seat.

How Much Better Are OBC-NCL Cutoffs vs General?

InstituteBranchGeneral OS ClosingOBC-NCL OS Closing
NIT TrichyCSE~1,250~680
NIT WarangalCSE~1,010~520
NIT SurathkalCSE~2,100~1,100
NIT CalicutCSE~3,500~1,800
IIT HyderabadCSE~890~380
IIIT AllahabadCSE~4,500~2,200
💡 Tip:OBC-NCL closing ranks are typically 40–60% of General closing ranks. This means an OBC student with CRL rank 8,000 can often get the same college/branch as a General student with rank 4,000–5,000.

OBC-NCL Certificate Requirements for JoSAA 2026

  • Your caste must be in the Central OBC list (not just state OBC list)
  • Certificate must explicitly state "Non-Creamy Layer" — not just OBC
  • Certificate must be dated after April 1, 2026 (current financial year)
  • Issued by a competent authority — SDM, Tehsildar, or equivalent
  • Must include your father's income details showing family income below ₹8 lakh/year
  • IMPORTANT: Expired or wrong-format certificates are rejected at document verification

Strategy: Should You Fill General Open Seats Too?

Yes — always fill both General Open seats and OBC-NCL reserved seats in your choice list. If your CRL rank is competitive for General seats at a good college, you might get it without using reservation (which gives you more flexibility). The algorithm checks both and gives you the best possible seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OBC-NCL rank in JEE Main 2026?

OBC-NCL rank is a separate rank calculated only among OBC-NCL candidates. It is NOT the same as your CRL rank. Your OBC-NCL rank will be much lower (better number) than your CRL rank — use this rank to evaluate OBC reserved seats.

Can I use OBC certificate from 2025 for JoSAA 2026?

No. JoSAA 2026 requires an OBC-NCL certificate dated April 1, 2026 or later. A 2025 certificate will be rejected at document verification and your seat will be cancelled. Get a fresh certificate immediately.

What if I fall in Creamy Layer? Can I still use OBC?

No. Creamy Layer OBC candidates (family income above ₹8 lakh/year or parent in certain government posts) are treated as General category for all central reservations including JoSAA. You cannot claim OBC-NCL reservation.

Is the 27% OBC reservation applicable at all central institutes in JoSAA?

Yes. All centrally funded institutes in JoSAA (IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) follow the 27% OBC-NCL reservation as mandated by the Government of India.
