How JoSAA Seat Allotment Actually Works
JoSAA's algorithm goes through your choices from top to bottom and allots you the highest-priority choice where your rank falls within the closing rank. This means:
- If you put a "reach" college first and it opens up, you get it
- If your rank is below the cutoff, it moves to your next choice
- The algorithm never skips to a lower choice unnecessarily — it always tries your highest preference first
- Filling 25 vs 75 choices makes a real difference — more choices = more chances
Step 1 — Know Your Category Rank, Not Just CRL
Your Common Rank List (CRL) rank is used for General category seats. But if you belong to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or EWS, each category has a separate rank and separate reservation seats. Always check both:
- Your CRL rank → used for General Open seats
- Your OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS rank → used for reserved seats in that category
- Home State quota → NITs reserve 50% seats for home state candidates (based on state of eligibility)
- PwD horizontal reservation → applies on top of your category
Step 2 — Collect Previous Year Cutoffs (2023, 2024, 2025)
Before filling choices, download JoSAA's previous year opening and closing ranks from the official JoSAA portal (josaa.nic.in → Archives). You need at least 3 years of data for each institute and program you're targeting.
Look for trends: Is the cutoff going up (more competition) or down? If closing rank for NIT Trichy CSE was 3,200 → 3,100 → 3,050 over 3 years, it's getting more competitive and you should include it as a reach if your rank is ~3,500.
Step 3 — Build Reach, Target, and Safe Lists
| Category | Definition | How many to include |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Your rank is 10–20% above the typical closing rank — possible but not guaranteed | 10–15 choices |
| Target | Your rank is within 5–10% of the closing rank — solid chance | 20–25 choices |
| Safe | Your rank is well below the closing rank — almost certain to get | 10–15 choices |
Step 4 — Order Your Choices by Preference, Not by Rank
This is where most students go wrong. Your choices should be ordered by YOUR preference — the college/branch combo you want the most should be at the top. Don't order by "most likely to get" — the algorithm already handles that.
For example: If you want CS at NIT Trichy more than Mechanical at IIT Patna (even though IIT Patna is "higher ranked"), put NIT Trichy CS above IIT Patna Mechanical in your list.
Step 5 — To Float or to Freeze?
- Float in Rounds 1–3 if you have reach choices still above your current allotment
- Slide in Round 3–4 if you're happy with the college but want a better branch in the same institute
- Freeze when you are fully satisfied, or mandatorily in Round 5 (final round)
- Never Freeze early unless you are 100% sure — you cannot undo it
Home State vs Other State Seats — Use Both
NITs have two quota pools: 50% Home State (HS) and 50% Other State (OS). Home state seats typically close at a lower rank (easier to get), while OS seats close at a higher rank (harder). Fill choices for BOTH — the algorithm picks whichever opens first for you.
Common Choice-Filling Mistakes
- Filling only 10–15 choices — you miss hundreds of opening and closing rank combinations
- Putting "safe" choices above "reach" choices — the algorithm never upgrades downward
- Ignoring IIIT and GFTI options — many have excellent placements and much lower cutoffs
- Not cross-checking your category rank — OBC/SC/ST candidates often underestimate their chances
- Forgetting to lock choices before the deadline

Frequently Asked Questions
How many choices should I fill in JoSAA?
Fill as many choices as possible — ideally 50 to 100+. JoSAA allows 200+ choices. Every unfilled slot is a missed opportunity. More choices means higher chance of getting a better seat.
What does Float mean in JoSAA?
Float means you accept your current allotted seat but stay in the pool for upgrades to any higher-priority choice in subsequent rounds. If a better choice opens up, you automatically get upgraded.
What does Freeze mean in JoSAA?
Freeze means you are fully satisfied with your current seat and do not want any further upgrades. Once you Freeze, you exit the upgrade pool permanently. Use Freeze in the final round or when you are 100% happy with your allotment.
Can I change my choices after locking in JoSAA?
No. Once you lock your choices in JoSAA, they cannot be changed. The lock is final. Always double-check your order before clicking Lock Choices.
Should I put safe colleges at the top of my JoSAA list?
No. Always put your most-preferred college/branch at the top, regardless of how competitive it is. The JoSAA algorithm will skip to lower choices automatically if your rank doesn't meet the cutoff for top choices.
