How Many Rounds in JoSAA 2026?

JoSAA 2026 runs 5 main rounds of seat allotment (reduced from 6 rounds starting 2024). After all 5 rounds, CSAB Special Rounds handle remaining vacant seats in NITs/IIITs/GFTIs.

JoSAA Round 1 — The First Allotment

Round 1 is the first seat allotment. The algorithm goes through your locked choices from top to bottom and allots you the highest-priority choice where your rank meets the opening/closing rank condition. This is typically the most competitive round.

  • After Round 1: Check your allotment at josaa.nic.in
  • If allotted: Pay seat acceptance fee (within 24–48 hours)
  • Upload required documents
  • Choose Float/Slide/Freeze (Float recommended in Round 1)
  • If not allotted: Stay in pool — you may get a seat in subsequent rounds

JoSAA Rounds 2–4 — Upgrade Rounds

As students decline seats, accept lower choices, or withdraw, higher seats open up. In Rounds 2–4, students who chose Float in the previous round may get upgraded to a better choice. New students who were not allotted in Round 1 may also get allotments as seats become available.

ℹ️ Note:Key insight: Cutoffs in Round 2+ can sometimes be MORE relaxed than Round 1, as students withdraw from good seats. Staying in the pool (Floating) can lead to surprising upgrades.

JoSAA Round 5 — The Final Round

Round 5 is the final JoSAA round. After Round 5 allotment, there is no further upgrade possible within JoSAA. If you have a seat, you must Freeze and report to the institute. If you do not have a seat after Round 5, CSAB Special Rounds are your next option.

What Happens If You Are Not Allotted After Round 1?

Do not panic. Many students get their seats in Rounds 2–5 as earlier allotments free up. Ensure your choices are locked, you have selected "Float" (or are still in the pool), and check your allotment after every round. You may still get a seat in later rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything between JoSAA rounds?

Yes — after each round, check your allotment, pay the acceptance fee if allotted, upload documents if required, and select your seat acceptance option (Float/Slide/Freeze). Missing any of these steps can result in seat cancellation.

Can I get a better seat in Round 5 than Round 1?

Yes, if you chose Float in all previous rounds. Round 5 allotment can be better than Round 1 if seats at higher-priority choices opened up due to withdrawals in intermediate rounds.

What if I miss paying the fee after Round 1 allotment?

Your allotted seat is automatically cancelled if you miss the payment deadline. You may still participate in subsequent rounds if you remain in the pool, but you lose your Round 1 seat permanently.

Is there a gap of how many days between JoSAA rounds?

Typically 3–5 days between consecutive rounds. The total JoSAA counselling process (Rounds 1–5) spans approximately 5–7 weeks from the first round allotment.
