What is CRL Rank in JEE Main?
CRL stands for Common Rank List. It is the overall rank among ALL JEE Main candidates, across all categories. Your CRL rank is used for General (Open) seats in JoSAA — seats that any candidate can compete for regardless of category.
What is Category Rank in JEE Main?
Category rank is your rank within your specific category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or EWS). It is calculated only among candidates of the same category. Category ranks are significantly lower (better number) than CRL ranks because the comparison pool is smaller.
CRL vs Category Rank: Example
| Student | Category | CRL Rank | Category Rank | Effective for JoSAA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student A | General (Open) | 8,500 | — (same as CRL) | Uses CRL 8,500 |
| Student B | OBC-NCL | 8,500 | ~3,200 (OBC-NCL) | Uses OBC rank 3,200 for reserved seats |
| Student C | SC | 45,000 | ~4,500 (SC) | Uses SC rank 4,500 for reserved seats |
| Student D | ST | 80,000 | ~2,800 (ST) | Uses ST rank 2,800 for reserved seats |
| Student E | EWS | 12,000 | ~4,800 (EWS) | Uses EWS rank for EWS reserved seats |
Which Rank is Used in JoSAA for Which Seats?
- General (Open) seats → CRL rank used (all categories compete)
- OBC-NCL reserved seats (27% of total) → OBC-NCL category rank used
- SC reserved seats (15% of total) → SC category rank used
- ST reserved seats (7.5% of total) → ST category rank used
- EWS reserved seats (10% of total) → EWS category rank used
- PwD horizontal reservation → Applied on top of your category rank
Why OBC/SC/ST Students Should Check Both Ranks
Sometimes a General (Open) seat at a college may be accessible to an OBC/SC/ST student via CRL rank, even at a more competitive cutoff. Other times, the reserved seat at the same college has a much lower category-rank cutoff. Checking both ensures you maximize your options.
Frequently Asked Questions
My CRL rank is 25,000 but OBC rank is 8,000 — which matters for NIT admission?
Both matter. Your CRL rank 25,000 is used for General Open seats. Your OBC-NCL rank 8,000 is used for OBC-NCL reserved seats (27% of all NIT seats). You should fill choices targeting both pools — you may get a great seat through OBC reserved quota even if General seats are out of reach at your CRL rank.
Can an SC student get a General Open seat?
Yes. If an SC student's CRL rank is competitive for a General Open seat, they can get it. Taking a General seat does not affect the SC reservation pool — more reserved seats remain available for other SC candidates.
Is EWS rank the same as CRL rank?
No. EWS rank is calculated separately among all EWS candidates. It is lower (better number) than CRL rank since the pool is smaller. EWS candidates compete against each other for the 10% EWS reserved seats.
How do I find my category rank on my JEE Main scorecard?
Your JEE Main scorecard shows all applicable ranks: CRL, and your category rank (OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS). If you belong to a category, both ranks will be printed on the scorecard. General candidates only have CRL rank.
