Top 10 JEE Counselling Mistakes to Avoid in 2026

Students lose better seats, miss deadlines, and sometimes lose their allotted seat entirely — all due to avoidable mistakes. Here are the top 10 to watch out for.

Mistake 1 — Not Locking Choices Before the Deadline

JoSAA allows you to edit choices until the deadline, but you MUST click "Lock Choices" and confirm. Unlocked choices are treated as incomplete and will NOT be considered in seat allotment. This is a disqualifying mistake — no exceptions.

⚠️ Important:Set a phone alarm 24 hours before the choice locking deadline. Do not rely on last-minute submissions — JoSAA portal can be slow during peak hours.

Mistake 2 — Filling Fewer Than 30 Choices

JoSAA allows up to 200+ choices. Most students fill 10–15 and stop. Every unfilled choice is a missed opportunity. A rank-based list of 50–70 choices covering all your realistic options dramatically increases your chances of getting a good seat.

Mistake 3 — Ordering by Prestige, Not Preference

Many students order choices by "IIT > NIT > IIIT > GFTI" without thinking about actual branch preference. If you want CS and get it at NIT Trichy but could have got Mechanical at IIT-X — which do you actually want? Order by YOUR preference, not by general rankings.

Mistake 4 — Ignoring Home State NIT Quota

NITs reserve 50% of seats for Home State candidates. Home state closing ranks are typically 15–25% more relaxed than Other State ranks. A candidate from Rajasthan ignoring NIT Jaipur Home State quota, for example, is leaving easy seats on the table.

💡 Tip:Always fill both Home State AND Other State choices for every NIT you want. The algorithm picks whichever opens for you — double the chances at no cost.

Mistake 5 — Freezing Too Early

Freezing your seat in Round 1 or 2 means you give up all upgrade opportunities. Unless you are absolutely satisfied with your allotment, always Float in early rounds. The algorithm will never downgrade you from your current allotment.

Mistake 6 — Not Uploading Documents on Time

After each round allotment, you have a short window (24–48 hours) to pay the acceptance fee and upload documents. Missing this window means your seat is automatically cancelled — even if you've done everything else correctly. Check your email frequently during JoSAA rounds.

Mistake 7 — Using Wrong Category Certificate

OBC-NCL certificates must be for the current financial year (April 2026 onwards for JoSAA 2026). An old OBC-NCL certificate from 2025 will be rejected at document verification, potentially cancelling your seat at the reporting stage.

⚠️ Important:OBC-NCL candidates: get a fresh caste certificate BEFORE JoSAA opens. The "Non-Creamy Layer" clause requires a current certificate — most state offices issue these in 1–2 weeks.

Mistake 8 — Applying for JoSAA Only (Ignoring State Counselling)

JoSAA and state counselling (MHT-CET, WBJEE, KCET, UP State, etc.) run simultaneously and independently. You can and should register for both. If JoSAA gives you a poor seat, state counselling may give you a better one — or vice versa. Withdrawing from JoSAA after state counselling admission is also allowed.

Mistake 9 — Not Researching CSAB Special Rounds

If you don't get a seat in JoSAA, or get a seat you don't want, CSAB Special Rounds are a second chance. Many students don't know this exists. CSAB requires separate registration after JoSAA ends and fills leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats.

Mistake 10 — Making Decisions Without Data

Filling choices based on what a friend, relative, or random internet comment suggests — without looking at actual previous-year cutoffs for your rank and category — is the root cause of most JoSAA mistakes. Every choice should be backed by 3 years of data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I forget to lock JoSAA choices?

Unlocked choices are not considered in seat allotment. You will be treated as if you did not participate in that round. Always lock choices before the deadline — set multiple reminders.

Can I fill choices again after a round in JoSAA?

No. Choices are filled once before Round 1 and cannot be changed after locking. You can only change your seat acceptance option (Float/Freeze/Slide/Withdraw) after each round's allotment.

What is the most common mistake in JoSAA counselling?

The most common mistake is filling choices in wrong order — putting lower-preference colleges above higher-preference ones, or not filling enough choices. Students also frequently miss document upload deadlines, causing automatic seat cancellation.

Is there a second chance if I miss JoSAA completely?

Yes — CSAB Special Rounds after JoSAA fill leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats. State counselling (MHT-CET, WBJEE, KCET, etc.) also runs independently. Missing JoSAA is recoverable but requires quick action.
